Angel Challenge 2016 Bergen brought the dynamic energy of Norway’s startup ecosystem to the west coast, offering an unmatched opportunity for startups and angel investors to collaborate and grow. This program not only aimed to inject funding into promising startups but also to educate both founders and investors on what it takes to succeed in the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship.

With a strong focus on mentorship, networking, and actionable feedback, Angel Challenge 2016 in Bergen became a pivotal event for startups eager to attract investment and for investors looking to discover the next big thing.

What is Angel Challenge?

Angel Challenge is a unique program designed to foster collaboration between startups and investors. It’s not just about providing financial support—it’s about creating a learning environment where both sides gain the skills and confidence needed to navigate the startup world.

The 2016 edition in Bergen followed the well-proven structure of Angel Challenge, engaging 20 angel investors and numerous startups in a competitive but supportive atmosphere.

At the heart of the challenge was a group investment of up to 1 million NOK, contributed by the participating investors, which was awarded to the winning startup at the program’s finale.

The Structure of Angel Challenge Bergen 2016

The program unfolded in four structured phases:

Phase 1: Application and Selection

The first step was a rigorous application process where startups submitted their pitches to a panel of investors and organizers. Out of all the applicants, 20 startups were shortlisted based on key criteria:

  • A committed and passionate team
  • A registered company
  • A validated concept
  • An existing MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
  • Companies no more than a few years old

This preselection ensured that only startups with strong potential and readiness moved forward.

Phase 2: Mentoring and Pitching

The 20 selected startups participated in an intensive mentoring session, followed by two days of pitching. This phase was designed to:

  • Provide startups with direct feedback from seasoned investors.
  • Allow startups to refine their pitches and business models.
  • Facilitate learning by observing the pitches of fellow participants.

Startups gained not only insights into their own businesses but also valuable lessons from watching others in action.

Phase 3: Due Diligence

From the 20 startups, five were selected to move on to the program’s most transformative phase: due diligence.

This phase was all about deep collaboration between the startups and the angel investors. Over five evenings, the startups worked closely with small groups of investors, who dedicated their time to:

  • Sharpening the startups’ investment cases.
  • Providing candid, constructive feedback on their business models, strategies, and scalability.
  • Teaching startups about investment structures, such as convertible notes.

This phase emphasized long-term value creation for startups, regardless of whether they secured the final investment.

Phase 4: The Grand Finale

The program culminated in an exciting finale where the five finalist startups presented their polished investment cases to the investors and the broader startup community.

One startup walked away with the coveted 1 million NOK investment*, while others leveraged the knowledge, mentorship, and exposure they had gained to secure future funding opportunities.
